The Medical Assistant plays an important role as a member of the Health Care team in a physician’s office or clinic. Theory and practical application in the fundamentals of medical diagnostic and laboratory techniques are taught. Students are introduced to the anatomy and physiology of the body systems and become Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified. In addition, students engage in "hands-on" training with regard to veni-puncture, injections, urinalysis, electrocardiography, measurement of vital signs, and preparation for physical and specialty exams. Students are taught basic medical office administrative procedures. The graduate is equipped with skills and knowledge necessary to meet the requirements of an entry-level Medical Assistant.
The Diploma program provides the background which enables a student to assume a responsible entry-level position as a Medical Assistant. Required laboratory skills and administrative procedures are taught for use in a physician’s office or clinic. The Associate of Applied Science Degree Program expands upon the Diploma program with an additional six education courses that provide the foundation for a graduate to find expanded long term career opportunities in management and upward mobility in the workplace. The Associate of Applied Science Degree Program also emphasizes communication skills that give graduates a competitive edge. The knowledge gained in this program, combined with work experience, may provide future entry-level opportunities in managing an office.
Graduates of the Diploma Program may secure such specific positions as: Clinical Medical Assistant, Administrative Medical Assistant, Medical Receptionist, Medical Bookkeeper and Laboratory Assistant.
Each course stands alone as a unit of study and is not dependent upon prerequisite training. A student may enter the program at the beginning of any classroom course and continue through the sequence until completion of all courses.
The externship is undertaken following the successful completion of all classroom training, and consists of 256 clock hours, averaging eight hours a day. This externship is unpaid.
