Objective

The Medical Biller & Coder is trained to work with health-related information and the systems used to collect, process, store, retrieve, and communicate information for the support of operations, management, and decision making with a medical facility or related industry. As computerization of information advances, the Medical Biller & Coder is vital to medical coding, computerized billing and patient care data analysis.

Career opportunities

The Medical Billing & Coding program is designed to provide a sound educational environment for instruction and training to equip its graduates for entry-level positions as Medical Billers & Coders.

Graduates of the degree program will be equipped with necessary critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. These skills, combined with the knowledge gained in the degree program and work experience, provide future opportunities in related supervisory roles.

Classroom procedures

Each course stands alone as a unit of study and is not dependent upon prerequisite training. A student may enter the program at the beginning of any course and continue through the sequence until completion of all courses. The course work consists of lecture/demonstration and hands-on computer laboratory procedures. The Associate of Applied Science Degree Program expands upon the Diploma Program with an additional six courses of general education that provide the foundation for a graduate to find expanded long term career opportunities.

Externship

The externship is undertaken following the successful completion of all classroom training and consists of 160 clock hours, averaging eight hours a day. Students work in a medical office or hospital. During the externship the student is allowed to perform the skills taught during the classroom portion of training. This externship is unpaid.

Transfer of Credits

Credits earned at High-Tech Institute - Nashville may not transfer to another educational institution. Credits earned at another institution may not be accepted by High-Tech Institute - Nashville.
